It’s a fine line in the world of design these days. From runway fashion to interior design, the simple line is being refined into some very appealing and popular patterns. Here’s a look at three trends you may want to add to what’s hanging in your closet, as well as what’s decorating your home.

Scallop

Scalloped-edges are the new trend on the block, but this versatile look is making serious headway in the design world for fashion and interior decor alike. It’s on fire! We’ve even brought scallop tile into our product line! Something about gentle edges in a continuous pattern offer a happy marriage of traditional and whimsical that attracts the eye without making too much noise. We like to think of it as the soft-spoken sibling of chevron. See more scallop inspiration here.

Chevron

The chevron pattern goes back in time, alright, but it’s been enjoyed a resurgence over the last year. The word chevron comes from the French word for roof of a house, where two rafters meet and make an upside down V. Today’s chevron is a repeating pattern that makes a fun, lively accent used in everything from small accessories to entire walls. Often called the “zig-zag,” this design element makes colors pop and adds contrast wherever it’s applied.

Stripes

Nothing is more classic than stripes, and today, stripes are being interpreted in really innovative ways. We’re seeing thick, bold stripes as well as mixed sizes. Always a favorite, stripes are a great choice if you want to be perpetually in style; you can’t go wrong with linear design element. Not only is it guaranteed to keep you on trend now, it will hold its appeal for a long time to come.

Patterns bring character and interest to a home, a dress, or an accessory. They draw in the eye with depth, space and color, and the open the door for you to put your personality on display. We personally love all three of these patterns and can’t wait to see their influence throughout the rest of 2013.

3 Kinds of Tile with Timeless Style: Tips from Mosaic Tile & Stone

When selecting tile for your home, it’s great to go with what you love. But be careful if “what you love” happens to be quirky, trendy or comes in a really distinct, dark color. Tile generally enhances a home’s resale value. By going with tile products that have timeless looks with broad appeal, you’re set to really connect with potential buyers should that day come.

There are many tile options that show beautifully (think great first impressions for your open house!) and have been known to woo potential buyers with their classic, sophisticated appeal. Here are three examples for those of you selecting tile with resale value in mind.

MARBLE

marble
Whether marble conjures images of delicate French country kitchens or illustrious wealth and elegance, this classic stone has truly proven its timeless appeal, spanning centuries and continents with its popularity. Marble radiates a warmth and softness that other natural surfaces can’t compete with and comes in a wide range of subtle colors for every designer palette. If you’re aiming for a classic, timeless quality with elegance to boot, marble should be in the running. If you opt for marble, explore and understand its maintenance. As a natural product, it will change and wear over time, but if well cared for, those changes are part of its charm. The patina that is created from everyday wear and tear offers a charm reminiscent of historic European architecture and carries forward marble’s timeless quality.

Three classic marble selections from our collection:

1. Bianco Carrara – Polished
2. Crema Marfil Marble – Antique Brushed
3. Calacatta Gold Marble Honed

PORCELAIN TILE IN THE LOOK OF NATURAL STONE

porcelain
Porcelain tile is popular for its practicality and durability, as well as its lasting beauty. With a hard, dense body, porcelain tile is made to withstand the wear and tear of foot traffic and resist moisture, stains and even extreme weather conditions if installed outdoors. Today’s manufacturers have advanced technology to replicate even intricate, natural stone looks. That means porcelain tile can capture the appearance of Mother Nature’s creations yet outperform them with superior technical characteristics. Natural stone looks fit just about any design style, from modern to classic to vintage to traditional..

Three of our favorite porcelains that mimic natural stone:

1. Creme Brulee Porcelain
2. Vein Cut Silver Travertine Porcelain
3. Chocolate Porcelain

SUBWAY TILE

subwaytile
The early 20th century gave birth to an era of subway tile and boy, are we glad. A distinctive charm and warm radiates from the classic surfacing material. Whether it’s the rectangular shape or brick-like pattern when displayed in a row, subway tile remains a classic and clean look that surpasses the test of time. Subway tiles look completely at ease in a quaint English cottage a well as an urban loft.  They also invite custom patterns and designs; they look timelessly sophisticated  in a chevron or herringbone pattern, for example.

Our top three choices for timeless subway tile:

1. Ice White – 3×6 Glossy Subway Tile
2. Dark Grey – 3×6 Glossy Subway Tile
3. Tender Grey – 3×6 Glossy Subway Tile

While resale is definitely a reality for the majority of homeowners (you never know where the winds may blow you!), it’s crucial you truly love your home. Make your space your own and fill it with what you love. William Morris said, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” And we agree. Part of the joy of being a homeowner is calling the shots – that’s half the fun! It’s your house, and your style and taste are crucial.

Using Tile on the Stairs: Tips from Mosaic Tile & Stone

As one of the most versatile decorating elements in a home, tile can be used in any room of your house. While some of the most popular uses are for kitchen backsplashes and floors, one of the most architecturally and aesthetically pleasing uses is as decor for the stairs! Stair risers, the vertical element in a set of stairs between one step and the next, often get left out in home decor and renovation.

But never fear: we’re here to speak up for the stair risers.

Tile a beautiful design element that add surprisingly affordable aesthetics to your stairs that will add serious style and spark conversation among visitors. Tiled stair risers are an art piece, and because the square footage is small, you can really explore a wide variety of options, especially if you’re on a budget.

tilestairsYour creativity defines the way you use tiles on your stairs. While consistency and uniformity may be important in other areas of the home, you can get a little wild with stair risers. Pick a single, defining element among various tiles and let that guide you. Perhaps you want a touch of blue or brown in each tile you select. Notice in the photo to the left that each of the stair risers here are different, but collectively complement one another and add a truly stunning pop of color and pattern in this house.
alternating
Consider selecting two different tiles and create alternating patterns. Doing this helps build a genuinely defined space for each individual step, and layers patterns together for a sophisticated touch that will have your guests wondering if an interior designer picked your stair risers out for you! As long as your tiles tie together and don’t clash, this can give you an absolutely stunning result.

uniformIf you’re more inclined to select one tile and one tile alone, your wow factor won’t be any less. Particularly with long, tall stairs, a single pattern adds drama and elegance to a small space that could otherwise be overlooked. The photo to the left with the single tile pattern is one of our Tabarka hand painted terra cotta tiles that can be found here.

We recommend using browsing our Art Tile collection if you’re looking to renovate your stairs or incorporate beautiful stair riser tile in your home. If you use one of our tiles for your project, let us know! We’d love to see the results!
